Raising the Bar
Today we hear an excerpt from a foundational piece in the string orchestra literature: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.3. Last concert, we heard Tchaikovsly’s Serenade for Strings, a piece written at the height of the Symphonic Romantic era. This concert, we’re looking further back, capturing the Baroque era’s dramatic and exciting musical textures. The Brandenburg Concerti are considered to be some of the finest pieces in the Baroque repertoire, and we are very excited to share this spirited piece with you.
Next concert we will hear William Grant Still’s Danzas de Panama, which looks back at the folk music of Panama, and Ottorino Respighi’s Antique Airs and Dances, which pays homage to Italian folk musical traditions.
Celebrating African Heritage
We begin our celebration of African Heritage in Symphonic Music with African-British Composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Danse Negre from his African Suite. Coleridge-Taylor’s musical education reflected that of many young British musicians as he entered into the Royal College of Music at age 15. After that he began a lucrative and fruitful musical career, earning the nickname of “African Mahler” in British music circles.
It wasn’t until Coleridge-Taylor visited America and met key figures such as African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar that he began exploring his African legacy within his music. At Dunbar’s urging, Coleridge-Taylor composed central pieces to his body of work such as the African Suite and The Song of Hiawatha.
American Legacy
In this concert, we hear one perspective of the American musical legacy. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring invokes a mythologized sound of the old American west. Appalachian Spring was originally commissioned as a ballet by the Martha Graham Ballet Company titled “a ballet for Martha.” The choreography describes the simple provincial life of early Shaker colonists in Pennsylvania and draws inspiration from their old religious songs. It is in works like Appalachian Spring that Copland’s influence over the sound of American Symphonic Music is canonized.
Next concert, we will hear another foundational figure of American Symphonic Music: famous African-American composer William Grant Still. A composer whose perspective and sources for inspiration are fundamentally different from that of Aaron Copland’s, but no less foundational to developing the American musical legacy.
Brass Ensemble
Triumphantly opening our concert, our brass ensemble will be playing the fanfare from one of Paul Dukas’s final works, a ballet named Le Péri. While not originally a part of the ballet, this fanfare was added to proceed performances of Le Péri due to the noisey nature of Parisian audiences in 1912 (these were the same audiences who next year would almost boo The Rite of Spring off the stage).
Le Péri depicts a simple mythological scene: the story follows a Persian youth seeking the flower of immortality from a Peri (a spirit from Persian mythology). The youth covets this flower only to have it wrested away from him and eventually abandoned.
