Annual Impact Report
2024-25

Dear SYSO Supporters,

We are thrilled to present the 2024-25 Impact Report, illustrating the breadth and depth of the work SYSO has done over the year. I hope this report brings you a sense of joy and pride that, together, we are lifting up and expanding access to musical opportunities for young people in our region.

I joined the team at SYSO in February 2025, just in time to see the students perform side-by-side with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall. While I listened to the orchestra that evening, I was struck by the power of music and the remarkable impact that connection has in building thriving communities.

Amidst the joys of music-making, the year also included sadness, as the musical community mourned the passing of Walt Cole. Walt’s legacy cannot be overstated—the lasting effect his efforts left on the community will be felt for generations to come. His work and spirit are deeply cherished at SYSO. Thank you, Mr. Cole, for inspiring generations of musicians!

As we look ahead with high hopes for current and future students, and with our nearly 85-year legacy of musical learnings, I am reminded of this piece of wisdom that exemplifies why we place importance on building community: “If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.” Thank you for joining us in this work—together, and with music, we will go far.

Looking forward,

Melody Mikkelsen
Executive Director

“Through SYSO, I gained leadership experience, broadened my technique, and built meaningful friendships. One of my most memorable moments was performing at Benaroya Hall—hearing the crowd cheer was electrifying and affirmed all our hard work. SYSO showed me that with dedication and commitment, anything is within reach. Both SYSO and MYSE have helped me grow not only as a musician but also as a communicator, leader, and community member.”

– Amani T., SYSO violinist

2024-25 Financials

Program tuition makes up a large portion of the income that keeps SYSO’s doors open. Yet, we recognize that tuition can be a barrier to participation for many families. As we strive to build more accessible opportunities that rely less on tuition for sustaining funding, we continue to focus on growing our fundraising efforts across all areas—individuals, foundations, companies, and government institutions—who share our belief in SYSO’s transformative impact on students and the community.

We are deeply grateful to all who champion SYSO’s mission through their generosity. Your support allows SYSO to reach more students every year, opening doors to life-changing musical experiences. Together, we create programs that respond directly to our community’s needs—especially when arts education is at risk. With your partnership, young people discover their voices and unlock their potential through the power of music.

Income: $2,606,798

Expenses: $2,458,807

*Core Mission Work includes expenses associated with administrative and fundraising work.

“To me, the magic of music comes from the bond that immediately connects strangers in a shared vision and understanding. Through SYSO, each week I rediscover the joy of contributing toward a purpose greater than myself.”

– Juliana Z., SYSO oboist

SYSO on Tour in Portugal

In the summer of 2025, SYSO embarked on its first international tour in more than 20 years. Over 10 days, SYSO musicians traveled across Portugal, performing to sold-out audiences in four cities—Lisbon, Fátima, Coimbra, and Porto. Along the way, they experienced the country’s sights, historic landmarks, renowned cuisine, and vibrant culture.

Throughout the tour, SYSO collaborated with guest artists and ensembles, fostering meaningful musical connections at every stop. In Lisbon, SYSO performed side by side with Jovem Orquestra Portuguesa, Portugal’s national youth orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Pedro Carneiro. SYSO was also joined for two performances by acclaimed Portuguese flute soloist Madalena Lopes. The tour concluded in Porto with a powerful collaborative performance featuring the Afghan Youth Orchestra and Maestro Tiago Silva.

“SYSO changed the trajectory of my life. The confidence I gained, the artistic identity I developed, and the belief that young musicians can achieve extraordinary things all started in [SYSO’s] rehearsals and programs. Supporting SYSO means opening doors for passionate young players who simply need the chance to grow. I’m living proof of what that chance can become.”

– Andrew Angelos, SYSO French horn alumnus

Building Program Capacity through Pay-What-You-Can

MY Southeast, SYSO’s Southeast Seattle ensemble has historically been tuition-free, allowing all students to participate regardless of financial capacity. While deeply connected to the heart of MY Southeast and SYSO’s accessibility goals, this funding model created challenges in building capacity as the program has grown in popularity.

For the 2024-25 season, SYSO introduced a pay-what-you-can model for MY Southeast, allowing families to opt in to a donation at a level comfortable for them—from 0% to 100% of a projected “tuition”—without any income verification required. This allows families who have the capacity to make a financial contribution to invest in the program for their students and others in the community, while still allowing families that rely on free programming to participate.

The MY Southeast pay-what-you-can model has been a huge success, outperforming projected goals for the launch season. This has created the possibility for stable, sustainable growth for accessible programs like MY Southeast and beyond at SYSO.
