The 2026 Competition

SYSO is thrilled to announce the finalists for the 2026 Concerto Competition! Meet the finalists for both the Intermediate and Advanced Divisions below.

See the finalists perform in the Concerto Competition Live Finals on Sunday, September 13, at 2 pm at Shorecrest High School. Tickets are free to reserve, with a suggested donation of $10. Get your tickets here »

Intermediate Division Finalists

Felix Zhang, Piano

Felix Zhang is an 11-year-old pianist from Seattle, Washington. He began his musical journey at age 4, and he is currently studying piano under the tutelage of Dr. Sasha Starcevich.

Felix has received many top honors in both local and international competitions, including Gold Medal at the Chopin Northwest Piano Competition, Gold Prize at the Pacific Northwest Piano Competition, First Prize at the Willard Schultz Scholarship Competition, Honorable Mention at the Washington State Outstanding Artist Piano Competition, Platinum Prize at the WPTA Singapore International Piano Competition, Gold Star at the Music and Stars Awards Competition, First Prize at the Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition and San Francisco International Music Competition.

In addition to the piano, Felix is also a dedicated violinist. He has been a member of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2022. He won both concerto and solo divisions at the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside in 2026. Felix enjoys performing on stage and sharing his music with others. Outside of music, Felix loves skiing and tennis.

Olivia Kuypers, Cello

Private teacher: Haeyoon Shin Krentz

Olivia Kuypers began playing the cello in 2021 at the age of six and studies under Haeyoon Shin Krentz and Dr. Kevin Krentz. In 2026, she was a Finalist Alternate at the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival and received an Adjudicators’ Choice Award at the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside (PAFE). Olivia is a three-time First Place winner of the Simon Fiset Low-Strings competition and a two-time First Prize in Class winner in the PAFE Cello Solo competition. She has also received multiple international awards in her age group, including First Prize and Exceptional Young Talent at the 2024 Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition in Amsterdam and Vienna and at the 2025 Tokyo Golden Classical Music Awards. Olivia has performed in winners’ recitals at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in 2023 and at the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in 2025. Olivia relishes the opportunity to perform and express herself through her cello.

Samuel Kim, Violin

Samuel is a promising 11-year-old violinist who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and artistry. Beginning his violin studies at age four, he currently studies under the guidance of Jan Coleman, cultivating a strong foundation and a vibrant performance style.

Samuel’s orchestral journey with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) reached a standout milestone when he joined at the age of 6 and remains one of the youngest members of the SYSO Debut Symphony Orchestra. His natural stage presence has earned him top honors internationally and locally, including first-prize and gold awards at the Pica Schubert International Music & Art Competition, Virtuoso Artists Festival International, Simon-Fiset High String Competition, and Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside (PAFE). He has also received recognition from the Vancouver International Music Competition, Cascade Symphony Orchestra’s Rising Star Competition, Alexander & Buono International String Competition, and SYAMFA.

In addition to participating in masterclasses with distinguished violinists such as Desirée Ruhstrat from the Heifetz Summer Festival, Samuel is a dynamic, well-rounded youth who enjoys golf, skiing, surfing, swimming, ice skating, painting, and origami. Honored to perform as part of the SYSO family, Samuel continues to share his passion as an inspiring young artist.

Advanced Division Finalists

Eric Chan, Cello

Private teacher: Olga Ruvinov

Eric Chan is a sophomore at Newport High School. He began playing cello at the age of four, and has studied under Olga Ruvinov since 2019. He is also coached by collaborative pianist Dr. Li-Tan Hsu.

A winner of numerous competitions, Eric performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall after winning First Prize in the American Protégé International Concerto Competition. He also won First Prize and was recognized as one of the top 15 performers at the Charleston International Music Competition, earned Grand Prix Alternate at the Russian Chamber Music Concerto Competition, was awarded First Alternate at the Eastshore Region Solo and Ensemble Festival, and has received multiple First Prize awards at the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside.

An active orchestral musician, Eric is entering his sixth year with SYSO and is a part of Newport’s Chamber Orchestra. Through both solo and ensemble performances, he continues to develop his passion for music.

Outside of cello, Eric enjoys playing golf and reading.

I started to play violin soon after my family moved to Seattle from France. Since then, I have played in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) academic program, enjoying the roles of concertmaster of Symphonette, Debut, Junior, and Youth Symphony Orchestras over the years. I was accepted for the Spring 2024 session of the Seattle Chamber Music Society Academy (SCMS Academy) during which my piano quintet performed live on King FM. In 2024 and 2005, I attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) Violin Workshops, and in 2026 I was accepted as a Violin Major to attend the inaugural Juilliard Summer Music at The Juilliard School in New York. I received a Distinction from the UK Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) for my 2023 submission to the highest ABRSM Grade-level Violin Performance exam, I was a finalist in the 2025 SYSO Concerto Competition, and I was awarded a Winner prize in the Classical Music/Violin category of the 2025 YoungArts National Arts Competition. I’m currently working on a wide range of pieces from the solo repertoire and I enjoy frequent opportunities to play with other musicians and friends in orchestras and chamber music ensembles.

Madelyn Huang, 17, is currently studying with Simon James in the Coleman Violin Studio. In 2026, she earned 2nd place in the solo violin category at the State Solo and Ensemble Competition and was invited to the SYAMFA Concerto Playoffs. She also attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival, where she studied with Renee Jolles.

Nathaniel Kim, Cello

Nathaniel, a 14-year-old cellist with perfect pitch and profound musicality, has practically grown up within the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras (SYSO) family. SYSO has been his true musical home since age eight, when he first joined SYSO Summer Music. Over the years, he has progressed step-by-step through every orchestra level from Prelude String Orchestra all the way to the flagship Youth Symphony Orchestra. SYSO has served as the bedrock of his artistic development, shaping him into a proud, dedicated musician and collaborative leader.

Studying under Sungmee Lee, Nathaniel expanded his training at the Seattle Conservatory of Music and the Seattle Chamber Music Society Youth Academy, and is also a proud member of HYSO. He is a first-prize winner at prestigious competitions worldwide, including the Vancouver, Elite, and New York International Music Competitions, and is recognized locally by KMA, PAFE, and SYAMFA. His musicianship has brought him to world-renowned stages, highlighted by a solo debut at Carnegie Hall, performances at DiMenna Center, Benaroya Hall, and a featured soloist appearance at McCaw Hall.

In addition to his performance schedule, Nathaniel is committed to community service, bringing the joy of music to local senior living residents through monthly performances.

Timothy Yu, Violin

Private teacher: Ronald Patterson

Timothy Yu, 13-year-old, began his violin studies with his mother, Gloria Guo, at the age of five and has been studying with retired UW professor Ronald Patterson since 2022.

In 2020, he joined the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. As concertmaster of the Symphonette Orchestra group during the 2022-23 season, Timothy demonstrated strong leadership skills and contributed significantly to the ensemble’s success.

In 2024, Timothy distinguished himself by winning the Portland Chamber Orchestra’s Under-18 Violin Competition. He was also a Grand Prix winner in the 3rd Annual Bellevue Symphony Concerto Competition 2025. In 2026, he received recognition from numerous competitions, including the Olympia Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition, the Seattle Symphony’s Young Artist Auditions, and the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival Association’s playoff. To gain deeper guidance in music, he attended the Heifetz Summer Program in the summer of 2026.

He has performed in masterclasses with professors Michi Wiancko, Mimi Zweig, David Perry, Ani Kavafian, Rebacca Henry, Li-Mei Liang, Keng-Ming Tsai, Chia-Hong Drapal Liao, Igor Petrushevski, Nicholas Kitchen, and violinist Angela Bae.

Timothy will be in the eighth grade at the International School in September 2026. He is also an avid reader and enjoys playing badminton, video games, and traveling.

About

The Concerto Competition offers an exciting experience for musicians to perform their concerto with one of SYSO’s orchestras.

Eligibility:

  • Participants must apply for SYSO’s Academic Year Orchestra Program (Youth, Junior, Debut, or Symphonette), MY Southeast, and/or SYSO’s Seattle Conservatory of Music for the upcoming academic year.
    • Musicians in Prelude who are interested in competing are encouraged to complete this form for a pre-screening opportunity before applying.
  • If you are selected as a finalist and do not enroll in one of the required SYSO programs for the upcoming academic year, your spot will be given to an alternate.

Competition Winners:

  • Competition winners will perform their pieces during the 2026-2027 season.
    • The SYSO Music Director and Director of Orchestra Operations will determine the performance location, date, accompanying orchestra, and length of the performance based on artistic and logistical considerations.
  • Winners are only allowed to play the piece they entered in the Concerto Competition in concert.
  • SYSO will cover the costs of music rentals for the orchestra.

Divisions

The Intermediate Division is open to musicians who were placed in SYSO’s Prelude*, Symphonette, and Debut Symphony Orchestras; MY Southeast; and Seattle Conservatory of Music musicians** in the 2025-26 season.

The Advanced Division is open to musicians who were placed in SYSO’s Junior and Youth Symphony Orchestras, and Seattle Conservatory of Music musicians** in the 2025-26 season.

Students new to SYSO will be placed in the division that best fits their experience and playing level based on audition videos.

Audition results for the 2026-27 season do not affect division placement.

 

*Musicians in Prelude who are interested in competing are encouraged to fill out this form for a pre-screening opportunity before applying.

**Seattle Conservatory of Music students not part of the Academic Year Orchestra Program will be placed in the division that best fits their playing level.

Rounds

The Preliminary Round

We are delighted to invite current SYSO musicians to participate in the preliminary round of our concerto competition. This round serves as an initial screening process to identify performers who will advance to the next stage of the competition.

The Final Round

Finalists will perform with piano accompaniment in this final round for their friends, family, SYSO community, and adjudicators in a public performance.

This event celebrates their musical achievements, as well as adds a significant accolade to their resumes, enhancing their future academic and professional opportunities. Concerto Competition winners will be announced at a later date.

All finalists must be available to participate in person without exception and must provide their own accompanist.

Apply

Applications for the 2026 competition are closed.

Students will prepare the following:

  • A live, unedited video recording of a concerto, concerto movement(s), OR a similar solo instrumental work (must be arranged for an orchestra). The video must be no more than 30 minutes in length and uploaded as an unlisted YouTube link. Recordings with evidence of editing or cuts will be disqualified. (Use of an accompanist is optional.)
  • Recommendation form submitted by one private teacher, music teacher, or other music professional.
  • A brief resume of your musical and educational experience history.

Students are encouraged to submit contemporary works, as long as these works have an arrangement for a full orchestra. Double-check details with your teacher or contact us at info@syso.org if you have questions.

  • June 10 – Competition applications open
  • July 9 – Applications and audition videos due
  • July 24 – Finalists notified of advancement
  • August 7 – Finalists deadline to confirm participation (headshot and bio required at this time)
  • September 13 – Concerto Competition Finals Live (Location & time TBD)
  • Week of September 15 – Concerto Competition winners announced
