Young String Virtual Orchestra
Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) is a composer known for looking forward just as much as one who looks to the past. An early example of neoclassical music, Antique Dances and Airs is a piece that draws upon Renaissance-era Italian music for its material. Two scenes are depicted in our performance of the Antique Dances and Airs. First we’ll hear the ballet corps: a depiction of early ballet that evolved out of elaborate court dances and rituals, followed by the masquerade, a visually iconic type of party popular in Renaissance-era Venice where guests wore highly decorated costumes and masks.
William Grant Still (1895-1978) In his 1948 piece, Danzes de Panama Still depicts a number of folkloric dances from the country of Panama. Inspired by the cataloging of traditional Panamanian music and dance by Elizabeth Waldo, Still emulates the sounds of traditional Panamanian art forms using the orchestra.
However, instead of simply orchestrating folk music, Still depicts each movement as if it was part of a celebration or party. Each movement is not just one dance, but a series of dances that flow in and out of each other depicting the playful and joyous nature of friends and family coming together and celebrating. The Punto is a formal couples’ dance that is often performed as a calm and slow interlude between more boisterous and energetic dances.
Intermediate Virtual Orchestra
Georges Bizet (1838-1875) originally wrote L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2 as incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play of the same name. While not what we might consider a soundtrack or a score today, incidental music of the late 1800’s would be used as filler music in between scenes to inform the mood and setting of the play.
Drawing deeply upon the music of Provence, France (where the play is set) the Suite features instruments such as the French Tambour De Provence. In an era before film and recorded sound, folk instruments would often be used to establish a setting for theater.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had many musical loves in his life, but not many were on the same level as his love for opera. Originally composed for a luncheon thrown by Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, Mozart continued to hone his preferred genre of comedic opera in Der Schauspieldirektor. The opera lampoons the squabbles of professional singers as they compete crudely to outsing and outwit each other. Ironically, the opera’s premiere involved a head-to-head competition between Italian and Germanic styles of opera in a gaudish display reminiscent of a modern “battle of the bands.”
Compared to Beethoven’s second symphony, the comedy in Mozart’s opera is part of text and instead of creating jokes using the formal conventions of music composition, the humor is more self-evident and presented via Gottlieb Stephanie’s libretto.
Advanced Virtual Orchestra
Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Second Symphony marks a major stylistic transition for Beethoven that would eventually lead to a sound and style that made him so enduring to lovers of Symphonic Music. Suffering from rapidly deteriorating hearing and significant mental health issues, Beethoven wrote this symphony in concert with his Heiligenstadt, a series of letters in which he contemplated suicide.
In the Second Symphony, Beethoven continues to manipulate the formal elements of the Symphony for the purposes of personal expression. By subverting well-known tropes and creating moments of surprise and humor within the traditional structure of the Symphony, Beethoven would begin to popularize centering the self in music and bending formal elements for the sake of expression. This would eventually be known as Romanticism in symphonic music.
