The Seattle Conservatory of Music is a place for students who love music and are curious to explore it more deeply in a supportive, creative environment.
Through a rich mix of classes and performance opportunities running from September through May, Conservatory students build skills, discover new interests, and grow as musicians, all while having fun and making meaningful connections along the way.
Whether students are playing in their school orchestra, band, or choir, or just beginning their musical journey, the Conservatory provides the tools, guidance, and support to help them thrive in any musical path they choose.
We believe in creating a space where students can explore, learn, collaborate, and develop into well-rounded musicians in a supportive and inspiring environment.

**NEW THIS SEASON: APPLY TO CHAMBER MUSIC AS A GROUP**
When submitting your application for Chamber Music, you will have the option to either apply individually to be placed in a Chamber Music group by Conservatory staff or as a pre-formed group with other students!
Please note: If applying as a pre-formed group, each student must still submit their own application and include the names of all group members on their application.
Exploring Conducting
This class is designed for students wanting to explore the fundamental elements of being a conductor; from posture and technique to theoretical learning, podium practice, and observational learning. Students enrolled in this class will conduct in a public performance towards the end of the season.
Requirements: No audition required. Approximately 3+ years of music instruction through school and/or private lessons.
Percussion Ensemble
This class is designed for students with at least one year of percussion experience who are eager to strengthen their skills across a wide range of orchestral and band percussion instruments. Through collaborative ensemble work, students will continue developing technical knowledge, rhythmic precision, and musical communication by playing repertoire written for percussion!
This class is a perfect fit for percussionists ready to take their playing to the next level. This class includes at least one recital performance during the year.
Requirements: Video audition required. Approximately 1+ years of percussion experience
Endangered Instrument Group Lessons
This is a class where students are able to explore a new instrument that has the potential to create more pathways to orchestral and band playing. Instruments offered are: Oboe, bassoon, French horn, low brass (trombone & tuba), viola, and bass.
Requirements: No audition required. Approximately 1+ years of music instruction or experience on any instrument (can differ from the instrument for which the student is applying) through school and/or private lessons.
*For instrument needs, please contact gabriela.garza@syso.org
Composition
This class equips students with the tools to create their own music, covering notation, harmony, and writing for a variety of instruments. Throughout the year, students will develop an original composition for string chamber orchestra to be premiered and recorded in a public performance.
Requirements: No audition or placement exam required. Students should have approximately 2+ years of music instruction and at least one year of Seattle Conservatory of Music’s Music Theory (or equivalent). Equivalent experience includes the ability to read basic music notation and a functional understanding of scales and arpeggios. This is typically acquired through music classes in school settings and/or through private lessons.
Advanced Composition
This class is designed for students who have completed one or two years of Seattle Conservatory of Music’s Composition class. Students will develop a final project: an original work for winds and/or percussion, which will be premiered and recorded at a public performance.
Requirements: No audition or exam required. Students should have approximately 3 or more years of musical training and/or have completed 1 to 2 years of Seattle Conservatory of Music’s Composition class.
Music Theory (3 levels offered)
Our Music Theory classes offer the students the opportunity to learn music fundamentals and to develop skills in music theory, music history, and ear training. Students in this class will gain the tools needed to complement and reinforce the concepts learned in their private lessons and in larger ensemble playing. This course is offered in three levels. For detailed information about level and placement, please contact Gabriela Garza at gabriela.garza@syso.org.
Requirements: No audition/exam required. Open to all students with approximately 1+ year of music instruction acquired through school and/or private lessons.
