Concerto Competition

Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras encourages instrumental excellence by offering outstanding students the opportunity to play concertos during our regular season concerts. These competitions are open to SYSO students only, and offer the public chance to see the future's most promising talents of today.

2007 Winners

Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra
Kouki Tanaka will play Conus' Violin Concerto in E minor for the November 18, 2007 Seattle Youth Symphony Concert.

Junior Symphony Orchestra
Leah Nelson
will be playing the Bartok Violin Concerto 2, I. Allegro von troppo at Meany Hall December 2, 2207with the Junior Symphony Orchestra.

About SYSO's Annual Concerto Competition
SYSO's annual concerto competition is open to any SYSO student, 18 or younger, performing in the Seattle Youth Symphony or Junior Symphony Orchestras. Winner(s) will perform with the Seattle Youth Symphony, and MUST be availble for several rehearsals prior to the dress rehearsal.

Applicants should prepare a concerto or concerto movement of maximum 30 minutes duration, send in an un-accompanied pre-audition tape, and may be asked to perform an audition in person, not necessarily from memory.

How to Apply
Please send the following:
  • A completed application form
  • Audio recording of the work (see application for details).
  • $30 entrance fee.
  • Letter of recommendation from your music teacher or other professional musician, and a brief resume of your musical and educational history.

Please Note

  • Applications and Audition tapes must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2008.
  • Finalists will be chosen based on the pre-audition tapes, and will be notified by March 25, 2008.
  • Finalists will perform their pieces, with accompaniment, in competition on April 30, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., at the Recital Hall, Benaroya, Seattle, WA. The competition is not open to the public.
  • When choosing your performance piece, remember that only music that is available for direct purchase (i.e. no rentals) will be considered for this competition. If you are in doubt, contact SYSO staff.
  • If you enter with only a single movement and are selected, you will only be eligible to play that movement. If you want to perform the full concerto, you must be prepared to play any part of that concerto in competition.
  • In the event of more than one winner, performances with the Youth Symphony may be limited to a single movement.
  • If you would like your pre-audition recording returned, please include a self-addressed envelope with correct postage.
